Being the most outstanding Buddhist temples in China, Hanging (Xuankong) Monastery is situated at the foot of the Hengshan Mountain, 75 kilometers southeast of Datong. The real name of the Wooden Pagoda in Yingxian County, located in Foging (Buddha's Palace) Temple in the northwestern corner of the county town of Yingxian, is Sakyamuni Pagoda. Since it was built completely of timber, it has been known popularly as the Wooden Pagoda of Yingxian County. Hengshan Mountain, also called “Hengzong” or “Changshan Mountain”, is the northern one of the China five famous mountains in Shanxi Province. It has the highest peak with an altitude of 2017 meters. Mt. Hengshan has been the place for Taoist activities for a long time. The legend has it that Zhang Guolao, one of the eight famous Taoist immortals in Chinese mythology, secluded himself and practiced Taoism right on the mountain.View Photos
Located at the southern foot of Wuzhou Mountain some 16 kilometers west from Datong City, Shanxi Province, contain China's largest and earliest stone sculpture, Yungang Grottoes were built against the mountain and extend about 1 kilometer (0.62 miles) from east to west. These are known as one of the three major Grottoes in China. The construction of the caves was started under the auspices of the noted monk Tan Yao in 453 and took 50 years to complete. View Photos
Located to the west of Datong City, Huayan Temple was one of the important temples for the Huayan Sect (one of the seven important Buddhist sects of China) during China's Liao Dynasty (916 - 1125) the sect found receptive popularity among the imperial courts. The original buildings served in part as the imperial ancestral temples but were destroyed in a fire. Rebuilt 1122 on a large scale with several extensions added during the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644) giving us the present complex.View Photos
