Mount Huashan, known as the most precipitous mountain, is located in Huayin County, Shaanxi Province, about 100 kilometers from Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi Province. With an elevation of 2200 meters, the mountain overlooks the Huanghe River and the Weishui River to the north and the links with the Qinling Mountains to the south. Mt Huashan is the tallest among the five great mountains.
This mountain is one of the Chinese Five Sacred Mountains together including the Eastern Mountain in Shandong Province, the Southern Mountain in Hunan, the Western Mountain in Shaanxi Province, the Northern Mountain in Shanxi Province, and the Central Mountain in Henan Province.
Mount Huashan is famous for its natural vistas of steep and narrow paths, precipitous crags, and a breathtaking mountain range. There is a proverb goes that in China: "From time immemorial the Mt. Huashan has been only one way to climb atop." The mountain is the holy land of Taoism, some famous Taoist temples perched on the mountain. In ancient times the emperors of different dynasties made pilgrimages here. There are many famous spots in the Mt. Huashan including the Jade Spring Temple (Yuquan Yuan), Cloud Terrace Peak (North Peak), Gold Lock Pass (Jinsuo Guan), Jade Maiden Peak (Middle Peak or Yunu Peak), Facing Sun Peak (East Peak), Landing Wild Geese Peak (South Peak), and Lotus Flower Peak (The West Peak) etc. There are ropeways to reach some of the peaks in the mountain.
Mount Huashan has five peaks with sheer precipices and overhanging rocks. The north peak called Cloudy Terrace Peak has only on hill that leads to the south with three sides disconnected with anywhere, and it is fairly steep. The south peak called Landing Wild Geese Peak is the highest at an elevation of 2.200 meters. The east peak also named Facing Sun Peak which is the most ideal place for observing the rising sun. The west peak called Lotus Flower Peak resembles a high wall hacked into two by an ax. This has been described as “The only path to get to the top of Mount Huashan”. The middle peak called the Jade Maiden Peak is in the center of East, South and West Peaks.
