The highest fresh-water body of water in the world (4,556 meters above sea level), Lake Manasarovar lies next to Lake Rakshastal at the southern foot of the sacred Mount Kailash (6714 meters high). On 'the roof of the world', Mount Kailash - with its four sheer cliffs and snow-capped peak—is home of the Hindu God Shiva and his consort Devi making it the most sacred mountain in Asia, especially for Tibetans. From around the mountain flow the four great rivers in Asia: the Karnali, the Indus, the Brahmaputra and the Sutlej. Tibetan scriptures speak of the four rivers supplied by the mountain. View Photos
Mount Kailash has been recognized as a holy site for more than 3000 years by four different religious groups (Buddhists, Hindus, Bon and Jains). The site is a popular worshipping ground, although few actually make the pilgrimage to its remote location. Standing 6714 meters (22027 ft.) high and surrounded by treacherous terrain, nobody has ever reached Mount Kailash's summit. This has been one of the reasons behind all the myths enshrouding this mighty mountain. Even attempting to summit the Kailash has been made illegal by the Chinese government. View Photos
The Tirthapura Hot Springs are considered to be the third most important pilgrimage site in Western Tibet. Legend has it that an incarnation of the Buddha visited these very springs, and pilgrims come to immerse themselves in the warm waters and wash away their sins.View Photos
