Dunhuang lies at the western end of the Hexi Corridor at 40' 10'N and 92'48'E in Gansu Province in Northwest China, an oasis on the eastern edge of Taklimakan Desert. It borders the Subei Mongolian County and Ahsai kazakh Autonomous County to the south, Anxi county to the northeast and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region to the northwest. It's a basin surrounded by the vast expanse of gobi desert and rolling high mountains. It has an area of 31,200 square kilometers, of which the oasis area covers 4.5 percent. The average elevation is about 1,100 meters.
