Wuwei has a very long history. People began living here 5000 years ago. In ancient times, Wuwei was called Liangzhou and is the eastern terminus of the Hexi Corridor. In 121B.C., during the West Han Dynasty when General Huo Qubin was sent by Emperor Wu in 121 BC to drive the invading Xiongnu tribe out of the region. The emperor name the region" Wuwei" in praise the general's great victory. He successfully defeated the Huns and seized the territory by Qilian Mountain. During the period of Three Kingdoms, Liangzhou was under the control of Ma Teng. After his death, Ma Chao took the post and governed the city for a short time. Later, it fell into the hands of hands of Cao Cao.
