Chengdu with a subtropical monsoon climate is featured by an early spring, hot summer, cool autumn and warm winter. The short winter is milder than in the Lower Yangtze because of the sheltering effect of the Qinling. Snow is rare but there are a few periods of frost each winter. The summer is longer and temperatures can be almost unbearable. Average daytime highs reach up to 29°C in July and August and the average low gets down to 3°C in January. Rainfall is common year-round but peaks in the summer months. When visited Chengdu city, the best time to go is between March and June or between September and November.
