Chongqing Economy

In China, the economy in the eastern part is developed. And the resources in the western part are abundant. Chongqing is in the middle of the two parts. It has the advantages of the Changjiang River and the southwestern areas. The geographical place is advantageous. Chongqing is the municipality under central authority with the largest population and the biggest administrative area.

Industry is the mainstay of Chongqing's economy. Its pillar industries include machine building, metallurgy, chemicals, environmental protection, foods and tourism. In addition, prominent industries, such as electronics, building materials, glass and ceramics and daily use chemicals are also comparatively well developed.

The automobile and motorcycle industries in Chongqing together with those in Shanghai, Changchun and Shiyan are regarded as the four biggest motor vehicle manufacturing centers in the country. Leading makers of cars and motor bikes include Changan Automotive Corp - China's fourth biggest automaker and Lifan Hongda Enterprise. Chongqing is one of China's six chemical production bases. The major ones are natural gas chemicals and fine chemicals. It is also one of the ten iron and steel production bases in China and one of the three major aluminum producers. Important manufacturers include Chongqing Iron and Steel Company and South West Aluminium - Asia's largest aluminum plant.

Agriculture also remains significant. Rice and fruits (especially oranges) are the area's main produce. Natural resources are also abundant with large deposits of coal, natural gas, and more than 40 kinds of minerals such as strontium and manganese, although the mining sector has been criticized for being wasteful, heavily-polluting, and unsafe.

Chongqing has a vast rural area. The unique geographical conditions and nice climate provide favorable factors for Chongqing to develop vertical agriculture and ecological agriculture.
