Inner Mongolia Museum was founded on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the establishment of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, which was built in 1957 and is located at the intersection of Xinhua Dajie and Zhongshan Lu in the heart of Hohhot City, the capital of the autonomous region is the first-class comprehensive museum in Inner Mongolia. The building of the museum is novel in the architectural style, combining traditional features with modern ideas and style. On the top of the main structure of the building stands the statue of a galloping horse, symbolizing the rapid development of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The exhibition area of the museum is 35,000 sq. meters.
If the imposing facades of big-city buildings have you feeling a little claustrophobic, there's no better remedy than a visit to Inner Mongolia's seemingly endless grasslands. From Hohhot, three such areas are within reach, Xilamuren (beginning 80 km north of Hohhot), Huitengxile (120 km west) and Gegentala (150 km north).
Alatan Khan, the chief of Tumd Tribe, began to believe in Buddhism when he was old. In accordance with his order, a lamasery was built in 1579 and given the name Dazhao Lamasery (Dazhao means "big" in Mongolian), which is located in the north of Dazhao Street of the old town. Dazhao Temple (Dazhao si) is the largest Gelukpa (Yellow Hat Sect) temple in town. It used to be a place where the feudal upper class enshrined and worshiped Buddha. It is a wooden building that is best preserved in Hohhot.
