Kashgar Airport is located around 10 kilometers to the north of the city. There are daily flights between Kashgar and Urumqi. There are regular bus services from the airport to the city for RMB 6. A taxi should cost approximately RMB 30.
Kashgar is the terminal point of the Nanjiang Railway (South Xinjiang Railway). Although the train transportation is very convenient, it is time-consuming. There are trains to and from Urumqi daily; the journey takes over 23 hours. Trains connect Kashgar to other major cities in China including Shanghai (over 3 days), Beijing (over 3 days), Lanzhou, Chengdu, Nanjing, Xi'an, Dunhuang.
Kashgar has built a comprehensive highway network with highways spreading over to the neighboring cities including Akesu, Korla, Turpan and Urumqi. Buses also go eastward from Kashgar to Dunhuang in Gnasu province and Golmud, the starting point of the Qinghai-Tibet railway. There are also buses from Kashgar to Tashkurgan, the last town along the Karakoram Highway that heads to Pakistan. Northwards and Westwards from Kashgar there are also highways stretching to Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Afghanistan.
If it’s the first time for you to Kashgar, the easiest way to getting around is taking a taxi. Base rate is 5 RMB for the first 3 km and then 1.2 RMB for every additional km.
