Located at the bottom of a small basin surrounded by mountains, Lhasa covers an area of about 30,000 square kilometers. It has a total population of 500,000, with 250,000 of them living in the urban area. Lhasa with an elevation of 3,650 meters lies in the central Tibetan Plateau. The city covers an area of 544 square kilometers and is "The Land of Gods" in Tibetan, sits on the north bank of River Lhasa, a tributary of the Yarlung Tsangbo River, at an altitude of 3,700 meters. This river runs through the snow-covered peaks and gullies of the Nyainqêntanglha mountains, extending 315 km. The river empties into the Yarlung Zangbo River at Qüxü, forming an area of great scenic beauty.
