Region and Population

Wuwei, also named Liangzhou, which is regulated the “Silver Wuwei” and located in the east end of Hexi Passageway, Gansu Province, with the Wuqiao Peak of Qilian Mountains to the south and Badan Jilin Desert and Tengeli Desert of inner Mongolia Autonomous Region to the north, is a vital communications point along the ancient Silk Road. Presently, it governs Wuwei City, Minqin County, Gulang County and Tianzhu Tibetan Autonomous County, covers an area of 33,238.04 km2 with a population of 1, 8445 million including 26 minor nations like Han, Tibet, Tu, Hui, Meng, Dongxiang, etc.

Natural Resources

According to the geological data in hand, 90 categories and 30 types of minerals have been explored, reserves of 15 types have been proved, in which limonite and graphite both domestically have particular large deposits non metal minerals and energy resources like cement rock, gypsum, mirabilite, granite and coal hold a superior position in northwest, and the reserves of metal minerals like manganese, copper and gold are enormous with great exploring potentialities.

Wuwei area is the major production base of commercial grains, oil, fruit and melons of the province as well as the major breeding base of the thin bared alpine sheep and white yaks. With 400 kinds of crops, 140 kinds of woods and fruits, 754 kinds of herbage, 26 kinds of domestic fowls and animals, 32 kinds of wild animals and 250 kinds of crude drugs. This area is rich in plant and animal resources such as wheat, corn, apple, bean, leather, etc. Some of the main agricultural and husbandry products have entered the markets of Southeast Asia and CIS such as licorice root, sheep pile.

 
   

Tourism

As the historic and cultural city, Wuwei City and Minqin County have many famous historic sites and relics with 543 relics preservation places and more than 30, 000 pieces of uncovered relics such as the running copper horse which is symbol of Chinese tourism and Wuwei, Xixia stele, Tiantishan grotto, Wuwei temple. White Tower Temple Ruin, ancient Great Wall ruins, Haizang Temple, Leitai Taoist Temple, Wuwei Desert Park, the rare wild animal center. Minqin desert plant garden, the desert reservoir and Tianzhu Three-Gorge, etc. A fan shaped tourist development, zone has come into been with Wuwei as axle center, expanding north to Minqin, south to Tianzhu.
