Xinjiang is an autonomous region of the Peoples Republic of China. It is a large, sparsely populated area, spanning over 1.6 million km², which takes up about one sixth of the country territory. It borders the Gansu and Qinghai provinces to the southeast, and the Tibet Autonomous Region to the south. The region also shares a 5,000 km border with eight different countries. Home to 47 of Chinese 56 ethnic groups, a diverse range of religions co-exist within Xinjiang. Xinjiang has an abundance of valuable tourism resources and the region is notably famous for the ancient Silk Road. Aksu Prefecture is located in the southwest portion of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It shares a 235 kilometers-long boundary to the northwest with Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Aksu is a city in the Chinese province of Xinjiang and the capital of Aksu Prefecture.
Changji is a county-level city in the Region of Xinjiang of the Peoples Republic of China. It is the seat of Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture.
Hami, located in eastern Xinjiang, is the center for politics, economy, culture, and transportation in this region. This city is 595 kilometers from Urumqi and with an average elevation of 760 meters and covers an area of 79,000 square kilometers with an urban area of twenty-three square kilometers.
Kizilsu Kirghiz Autonomous Prefecture is an autonomous prefecture of the Peoples Republic of China. Located in the western part of Xinjiang, the prefecture has an area of 69.112 km² and its capital is Artux. In the Kyrgyz language, Kizilsu means red water.
Kashgar is a important hub on the Old Silk Road, a vibrant Islamic centre within Chinese territory. It is the largest oasis city in Chinese Central Asia and 90 percent of its population are Uygur. It is bordering the Taklamakan desert in the east, the Kunlun Range and Ali prefecture of in the south.
Turpan City Prefecture is located to the southeast of Urumqi, the capital city of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It is an area of 15,738 square kilometers (6,076.5 square miles). Turpan means the lowest place in the Uygur language and the fertile land in Turki.
Urumqi is the political, industrial and economic capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Urumqi, meaning fine pasture in Mongolian, was first inhabited by a mixture of ethnic groups about 3,000 years ago. It is by far the largest city on China vast Western interior.
