The Mogao Grottoes are one of the three famous ancient sculptural sites of China together with Longmen and Yungang. In 1987, the Mogao Grottoes were listed as the World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO.The Mogao grottoes were built on the eastern slopes of the Mingsha Mountain. Construction of the Buddhist cave shrines began in 366 AD as places to store scriptures and art. A Buddhist monk called Yue Seng carved the first cave of Mongo in 366AD, during the rule of the Eastern Jin Dynasty. His attempt was carried further by the other succeeding dynasties resulting in the beautiful collection of caves.
Legend has it that a prominent monk about 1350 years ago rode a horse to Fusan, which is now Japan, to help spread Buddhism. On his way, his cherished white horse died in Dunhuang. He was so disconsolate that he buried the horse and built a pagoda in memory of it.
It was originally built by the Emperor Wu during the Han Dynasty and was one of the two most important passes (the other is Yumen Pass) that served to protect Dunhuang from invasion from the west. It was the main access to West Region and an important conjunction on the south route of the Silk Road.
It was named because of the jade that was transported through this pass to central China. The famous poet, Wang Zhihuan, in Tang Dynasty wrote the famous line:Beyond the Yumen Pass the breath of Spring has never crossed, which express the feelings for his hometown afar. Todays Yumen Pass is a small square castle standing on the sand mound in the east-west strip of desert.
